Home White House Fellows Foundation and Association

Election as a Fellow of AAAS is a lifetime honor, but it comes with an expectation that recipients maintain commonly held standards of professional ethics and scientific integrity. In the rare case that an elected Fellow no longer meets this expectation or otherwise fails to merit the continued status of Fellow, one or more AAAS Members can participate in a revocation process, which will determine whether the individual’s Fellow status should be rescinded. The new class hails from academic institutions, laboratories and observatories, hospitals and medical research centers, museums, corporations, nonprofit organizations, institutes and government agencies. One could immediately say that these aren't really secrets; instead, they are simply common sense-and that would be a fair point. The truth of the matter is that when it comes to the basics of human nature, there are no secrets. As we are told in the Old Testament's Book of Ecclesiastes, "there is no new thing under the sun."

The interviews are based on both the interests of the Fellows themselves, and the interests and needs of the Executive Branch offices. National Finalists participate in "Selection Weekend," which is three evenings and two days of interviews with members of the President's Commission on White House Fellowships. National Finalists who are selected as Fellows will need to come to Washington, DC in July to interview for a work placement. In order to get the proper security clearance for the fellowship, individuals with dual citizenship would need to give up any non-U.S. Applicants should apply online by visiting the program website (/fellows).

Opinion: My mother set herself on fire. Why do people choose to self-immolate?

One organizer complained that the White House Correspondents' Association - which represents the hundreds of journalists who cover the president - largely has been silent since the first weeks of the war about the killings of Palestinian journalists. Protest organizers said they wanted to bring attention to the high numbers of Palestinian and other Arab journalists killed by Israel's military since the war began in October. The night's remarks also were expected to cast a spotlight on the many journalists detained and otherwise persecuted around the globe for doing their jobs, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who has been imprisoned in Russia since March 2023. Kelly O'Donnell, president of the correspondents' association, opened the event by reminding the audience of the important work that journalists do but noting that the dinner is happening at "a complex moment for our nation," and in a decisive election year. In previous years, Biden, like most of his predecessors, has used the glitzy annual White House Correspondents' Association gala to needle media coverage of his administration and jab at political rivals, notably Republican rival Donald Trump. The Yale psychology professor has been appointed to an influential group charged with directly advising the president and the White House on science, technology, and innovation.

In some cases, an investigator will contact you directly to schedule a personal interview. Investigators also may contact employers, neighbors, friends, and relatives. Applicants are required to submit a minimum of three, but no more than five, references.

At the time Fellows are appointed, appropriate clearances are certified by the Executive Office of the President and then issued by the department or agency to which Fellows are assigned. If it appears that a clearance will not be possible, a National Finalist will be notified by the Program Director and will not attend the Selection Weekend process. Regional Finalists are required to submit comprehensive background information, as Fellows must be qualified to pass a top secret security clearance. Once this information is submitted, background investigations will commence.
